Acts 18

Summary. In this chapter, the apostle Paul continues his missionary journey. He travels to various places, staying and ministering as guided by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the Lord, without fear of people or the dangers he may encounter during his travels. Acts 18:1-11. Apostle Paul proclaims the good news in Corinth. In Corinth, the apostle Paul made new friends, believers, and he stayed and worked with them. He was occupied with the burden of spreading the good news to both Jews and Gentiles. While some Jews opposed his message, others embraced it and offered their support to him. The Lord encouraged the apostle through a night vision, and he remained in Corinth for a year and a half. Acts 18:12-17. In Corinth, the Jews try to fight the work of God. A group of Jews, who had opposed the message of the Lord, rose up against the apostle and brought him to the judgment seat. The proconsul did not uphold what is right or wrong and allowed the Jews to mistreat the believers in front of the judgment seat. Acts 18:18-22. Apostle Paul takes his missionary journey from Corinth to Antioch, Syria. Guided by the Holy Spirit, the apostle left Corinth, after many days, and sailed to Syria. In his travels to Syria, he stopped at Cenchrea and Ephesus before landing at Caesarea, and then he proceeded to Antioch. Being faithful and honest toward the order he received from the Lord, he didn’t stay in Ephesus when he was asked to stay longer. Acts 18:23-26. Apollos in Ephesus. In Ephesus, Priscilla and Aquila, guided by the Holy Spirit, took Apollos, a blessed man, and explained to him the complete good news about the Lord Jesus. Acts 18:23, Acts 18:27-28. Apostle Paul takes his missionary journey from Antioch through Galatia and Phrygia back to Achaia. After some time in Antioch, the apostle Paul left the church there and traveled through the regions of Galatia and Phrygia before heading back to Achaia. In his travels, he proclaimed the good news and strengthened the disciples in these regions.
1 After these things, having departed from Athens, he came to Corinth.
Comments Acts 18:1 The Lord God Almighty has a specific plan for people, and now, because the work in Corinth will need the hearts that are strong and faithful to the Lord God Almighty, He is sending the apostle and believers to go there.
2 And having found a certain Jew named Aquila, of Pontus, by race, lately having come from Italy, and his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart out of Rome, he came to them;
Comments Acts 18:2 “And having found a certain Jew named Aquila ...” The Lord’s children have been scattered all around, and now, the Lord God Almighty has a plan to use this couple in work.
“Because Claudius had commanded all the Jews ...” The ruler of that world was against the Lord God Almighty’s children and gave orders to chase them all out of his land. The Lord’s children needed to take a journey to escape the hardships; these hardships would help them to turn back to the Lord God Almighty for help.
3 and because he was of the same trade, he abode with them, and worked, for they were tentmakers by the trade.
Comments Acts 18:3 Give attention, all believers, the verse tells clearly that the Lord God Almighty knows all things. For the apostle to stay with some people, the reason must be not only for this physical world but the spiritual world as well. The people with whom the apostle stayed have the same occupation as the apostle. To stay and work together will make the relationship go smoothly in both ways.
4 Now he reasoned in the synagogue on every Sabbath, persuading both Jews and Greeks.
Comments Acts 18:4 “Now he reasoned in the synagogue ...” Give attention, all believers, to the duty of believers. The apostle does his duty by going to the place of worship, and then he tells the purpose of coming to worship together.
“Persuading both Jews and Greeks.” The Lord God Almighty wants all humans to be saved, regardless of race or language. All can come to Him and be saved; that was the reason for the apostle to be there and talk with them all.
5 But when also Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was constrained by the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.
Comments Acts 18:5 “But when also Silas and Timothy ...” The Lord God Almighty worked in the hearts of the faithful servants, prompting them to seek help and advice from the apostle. In their hearts, all questions could be addressed by the apostle; their request would help strengthen both sides to support each other in the task.
“Paul was constrained by the word ...” The apostle’s heart and mind were occupied with the burden of spreading the good news regarding the beloved Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. The apostle’s heart wished only to help these people to know the truth of the gospel.
6 However, on their opposing and blaspheming, having shaken out the raiment, he said to them, Your blood be upon your heads; I am clean. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles.
Comments Acts 18:6 “However, on their opposing and ...” The Lord God Almighty stirred up His apostle for the burden to proclaim the good news to them, but the people showed opposition and blasphemed against the Holy Word. People’s behavior also let the apostle know that the Lord God Almighty will not blame him if he fails in convincing the people’s hearts to receive the true gospel of the Lord God Almighty, which has been proclaimed to them by the apostle.
“Your blood be upon your heads ...” When shaking out the raiment, it also told the people in that area that the Lord God Almighty had shown mercy to them, but it was their own fault for rejecting and blaspheming against the Lord God Almighty. And this also led the apostle to feel that his duty here among them was finished; they were the ones who rejected being saved; with full knowledge, their own hearts had rejected the Lord God Almighty and His good news for them.
7 And having departed from there, he came to the house of a certain one named Titus Justus, a worshipper of God, whose house was adjoining the synagogue.
Comments Acts 18:7 “And having departed from there ...” The Lord God Almighty guided His apostle to a house where hearts were worshiping the Lord God Almighty, and this house will bring many new believers who have hearts clean and searching for the Lord God Almighty.
“A worshipper of God, whose house ...” The house that the disciple entered was in the right location for believers to enter and worship. Also, being close to the worship place will give more chances to people to come; gathering together in worshiping the Lord God Almighty makes the heart of the Lord happy to see.
8 Now Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his household; and many of the Corinthians hearing, believed and were baptized.
Comments Acts 18:8 “Now Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue ...” The ruler of the synagogue and his family are believers. The disciple will not face the challenge from the ruler of the synagogue, because the Lord God Almighty had already worked in this household’s hearts to join Him in worship.
“And many of the Corinthians hearing.” Give attention, all humans, when your ear hears the good news, don’t let the good news be only in your ear, because the good news must enter into the heart of the hearer; and that is the invitation for the Lord God Almighty to enter into the soul of a person, by hearing, and not leaving just as hearing.
“Believed and were baptized.” The result of hearing, not only in the ear, leads the person to believe in the good news. When the heart believes, it will guide the person to receive the baptism, which occurs at the time of water baptism, and the person’s soul will be ready to receive the greater blessings.
9 And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, Fear not, but speak and be not silent,
Comments Acts 18:9 “And the Lord said to Paul in the night ...” The apostle received guidance straight from the Lord God Almighty in a vision. This vision was not only hearing but seeing as well.
“Fear not, but speak and ...” This word is not only an order but also a confirmation of protection and duty for the apostle; and also, it lets the apostle know that the Lord God Almighty will use his mouth to spread out the good news.
10 for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, for there are many people Mine in this city.
Comments Acts 18:10 “For I am with you.” The work will be hard, but the apostle had the confirmation that all that he will do is not him alone doing it, but the Lord God Almighty’s hand and will, also will be with it at all times.
“And no one will lay a hand on you ...” Now the apostle’s heart found true peace because of the promise of the Lord God Almighty that he would be safe from all harm.
“For there are many people Mine ...” It may have many oppositions against the work, but the Lord God Almighty had already been in many people’s hearts in this place, and many had been proclaiming to belong to the Lord God Almighty.
11 And he remained there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
Comments Acts 18:11 The hearts of people rooted in dark teachings needed help, and the Lord God Almighty put His disciple there to remain for a certain length of time, not only to teach but also to be an example for the people to follow.
12 However, Gallio being proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and led him to the judgment-seat,
Comments Acts 18:12 Give attention, the verse tells us clearly, the people who rose up against the disciple are the Lord’s children. These Jews were a group of the Lord’s children who strayed away and did not study the teachings they had received. They heard the good news and saw examples, but the dark mind controlling them led them to take the apostle and present him to the outsiders for judgment. The wrongdoing is not against the apostle but against the teaching of the Lord God Almighty Himself.
13 saying, This man persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.
Comments Acts 18:13 The ruler of the people used human law to judge the apostle. When the apostle did not do anything against human law, as he was following the Lord God Almighty’s law, which all the Lord’s people should follow as well, but now the Lord’s children used this to fight the apostle.
14 Now, Paul was about to open his mouth; Gallio said to the Jews, If indeed it was some unrighteousness or wicked crime, O Jews, according to reason, I would have endured with you;
Comments Acts 18:14 “Now, Paul was about to open his mouth.” The apostle, with his human mind, wanted to defend himself, but it was not the time for speaking yet. The Lord God Almighty would bring things to happen shortly that would make him wait before speaking.
“Gallio said to the Jews ...” The human ruler looked at the situation from the point of view of human law, and the apostle did not go against the law, which made the human ruler feel no confidence in making a decision at this point.
“O Jews, according to reason ...” The human ruler did not want to be in conflict with the people and took the way out, which would make him not look bad and not be against the people. By giving a reason about what the apostle did wrong to be judged here, this would give a way out for the human ruler.
15 but if it is questions about words and names and in reference to your law, look to it yourselves; I do not intend to be a judge of these things.
Comments Acts 18:15 “But if it is questions about words ...” The answer given by the human ruler also tells all believers not to take offense when people call you by names in the way to point out who you are and what you are. That is only the words of humans and has no impact on your souls. As this verse tells us, this outsider does not care about the law or traditions of the Lord’s children.
“I do not intend to be a judge ...” When this judge did not understand something, instead of admitting they did not know, the worry about human judgment towards themselves made them refuse to be involved.
16 And he drove them from the judgment-seat.
Comments Acts 18:16 As a ruler, not getting involved in right and wrong among people is wrong. When he drove the people out from where he was the ruler, it made him become the one responsible for the result of what might happen to the apostle.
17 Then they all laid hold of Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment-seat. And nothing about these things mattered to Gallio.
Comments Acts 18:17 “Then they all laid hold of Sosthenes ...” When the mob has dark mind control, it creates power; the bravery of the mob comes from the dark control. Right or wrong has no meaning for the mob; its only purpose is to do what the dark controls.
“And nothing about these things ...” The human ruler saw the problem but had no fear because the ruler knew that this was not against them but against those of the synagogue.
18 And Paul, having remained yet many days, having taken leave of the brothers, sailed away to Syria; and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shaved the head in Cenchrea; for he had a vow.
Comments Acts 18:18 “And Paul, having remained yet many days.” The apostle, with a pure heart towards the situation, received advice from the Lord God Almighty to stay put. The apostle listened and obeyed, remaining in the place. With his eyes, he saw the wickedness of people, but with a heart full of faith and trust in the Lord God Almighty, the apostle stayed there.
“Having taken leave of the brothers ...” The Lord God Almighty provided a specific way for the apostle to get out, guiding him to talk with the believers about the fact that he must leave now. The apostle had trusted that all would go according to what the Lord God Almighty had planned.
“And with him Priscilla and Aquila ...” The faithful believers accompanied the apostle, but at the same time, the apostle made a vow with the Lord God Almighty to shave his hair off. In the apostle’s heart, the vow he must keep because his life belongs not to him but to the Lord God Almighty, and if he made the vow to shave his hair, then he must do it.
19 Now they came to Ephesus, and he left them there; but he himself having entered into the synagogue, reasoned with the Jews.
Comments Acts 18:19 “Now they came to Ephesus.” The place, in Syria, that needed to know more about the truth was still waiting, but at this place, in Ephesus, the apostle also needed to make a decision regarding following the Lord God Almighty’s guidance in his heart without delay or staying and helping the friends that he did make at this point in time. The decision-making at this time will point out the life ahead for each individual, but especially for the apostle himself, who will learn to do the will of the Lord God Almighty before his want of life.
“And he left them there.” For the apostle to leave someone behind was not easy for his own heart, but the apostle himself knew that the work ahead he must do it. For the apostle, leaving the companions behind, also showed the trust he had in the Lord God Almighty’s decision.
“But he himself having entered ...” All humans, give attention: the duty of the apostle was to proclaim the good news to all humans. Here, the apostle joined the synagogue to worship with people, but this joining was not worship alone, but teaching what the Lord God Almighty has given him, the knowledge and experience of life, to others.
20 And of them asking him to remain for a longer time, he did not consent;
Comments Acts 18:20 To stay in one place for a longer time, the apostle would not make a decision by himself; he made all his decisions based on the guidance of the Lord God Almighty for him to do. In his heart, he felt that his work was still ahead of him, not just here alone.
21 but having taking leave, and having said, I will return again to you God willing, he sailed from Ephesus.
Comments Acts 18:21 “But having taking leave, and having said ...” The apostle is faithful and honest toward the order; whatever guidance he receives from the Lord God Almighty, the apostle will always follow. Now that he has received an order to leave and go to another place, he follows without delay.
“He sailed from Ephesus.” The journey may be dangerous, but the heart of the apostle has trust in the mercy that the Lord God Almighty has planned for him in this journey, and also will keep him safe all the way. For the work to succeed, the heart must be fully committed to follow, and here is an example of a faithful apostle who follows the guidance without being afraid or delaying; even though the journey may not look safe to travel, but he had put his own life in the Lord God Almighty’s hand, leaving no fear in him.
22 And having landed at Caesarea, having gone up and having greeted the church, he went down to Antioch.
Comments Acts 18:22 Give attention; the place the apostle will always go is the synagogue for worship, because in his heart, only the Lord God Almighty’s will is what he will do and follow with all his might.
23 And having spent some time, he went forth, passing through successively the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
Comments Acts 18:23 “And having spent some time ...” The apostle spent time in this place in order to guide people and strengthen them in faith, as the Lord God Almighty guided him.
“Passing through successively ...” The traveling distance and places will help the apostle to spread the good news. The Lord God Almighty guided the apostle to go through these places for a reason. The people whom the apostle would meet, those whose eyes would be open, some would give their hearts to the Lord God Almighty, and those would be the next who would spread the good news in these areas.
“Strengthening all the disciples.” Give attention, the apostle’s duty in strengthening the faith of the believers has been told in this place. The Lord God Almighty used the right person in each place to strengthen the faith of the believers.
24 Now, a certain Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus, being mighty in the Scriptures.
Comments Acts 18:24 Give attention, all readers, the person’s name has been mentioned in the Holy Bible, not because of riches or good looks, but for their knowledge of the Holy Word. This person had given their heart to the Lord God Almighty in studying the Scriptures, as all believers should do; take this person as an example. Meditate on the Holy Bible and pray to strengthen your faith, so the Lord God Almighty can use you to spread the good news.
25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught earnestly the things concerning Jesus, knowing only the baptism of John;
Comments Acts 18:25 “This man was instructed in the way ...” Give attention, all readers, the person received the teaching and knowledge in the way of the Lord God Almighty as intended. With his own heart, he had faith and sought more knowledge; his heart was right with the Lord God Almighty. The blessed man, who can speak eloquently, will receive the duty from the Lord God Almighty to spread the good news.
“He spoke and taught earnestly ...” Upon hearing about the beloved Son of God, the Lord Jesus, his heart was completely convinced, and he believed that He was truly the righteous One of God coming down.
“Knowing only the baptism of John.” Give attention, all believers, this man knew the teaching about the beloved Son of God from the messenger of the Lord. The teaching and the message he received opened his heart to accept the true gospel.
26 and he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. However, Priscilla and Aquila having heard him, they took him to them, and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
Comments Acts 18:26 “And he began to speak boldly ...” Bold and brave was the character of the man. He had received the true knowledge about the beloved Son of God, which made him feel free to speak openly in the synagogue. The good news will be proclaimed further when the heart opens and receives the good news and meditates on the message.
“Priscilla and Aquila having heard him ...” When the faithful servants heard the blessed man proclaiming the good news, the Lord God Almighty guided their hearts to take him and explain the complete good news to him, because the message of the messenger of the Lord, which the blessed man had received, was not complete yet.
27 Then, he wishing to pass through into Achaia, the brothers, having encouraged him, wrote to the disciples to receive him, who, having arrived, he helped much those having believed through grace;
Comments Acts 18:27 “Then, he wishing to pass through ...” The Lord God Almighty guided the apostle in the direction and places he should pass through. In each place, the good news will impact many hearts. The Lord God Almighty has people in each place whose hearts are open to receive the good news, and their hearts are eager to spread the good news further.
“The brothers, having encouraged ...” This is the way the Lord God Almighty wants His children to do for one another. If you know someone in a place where the good news should be shared, you can help as well. As the verse instructs, these believers sent a letter to encourage others to receive the apostle and help spread the good news in that area.
“Who, having arrived, he helped much ...” The apostle tells all people and believers in that place that the true saving grace is not only by believing. Believing but not acting will not help. If you believe, you should meditate on the good news and share it not only among believers but also with everyone you meet, emphasizing the mercy of the Lord God Almighty for all humans.
28 for he was powerfully convicting the Jews publicly, showing by the Scriptures, Jesus to be the Christ.
Comments Acts 18:28 “For he was powerfully convicting ...” The Lord’s children in that area still clung to the old traditions and teachings from their forefathers. The apostle had a duty to explain that the mercy that the Lord God Almighty sent is not the Holy Word alone, but the true mercy of all, the Lord Jesus, had come already; and the Lord’s children need to open their hearts to receive the good news without negativity and being narrow-minded, clinging to what the forefathers taught alone.
“Showing by the Scriptures, Jesus ...” The apostle points out that the Scripture, which the Lord’s children cling to, also tells us about the true mercy of God the Father by sending His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus, to be the true Christ of the Father; and the true salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ not just Scripture alone.
29 Being, therefore, the offspring of God, we ought not to think of God to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of craft and device of man.
30 The times, indeed, therefore, of ignorance God having overlooked, now He commands all men everywhere to repent,
31 because He set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness by a man whom He appointed, having provided assurance to all, having raised Him out from the dead.
32 Now, having heard of the resurrection of the dead, some indeed mocked; but others said, We will hear you concerning this also again.
33 Thus Paul went out from among them.
34 However, certain men having clave to him, believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
Life and faith applications. 1) If persecution arises, we should pray and seek the Lord’s guidance on where to go and settle. 2) As Christians, we must work and support our families and assist those who serve the Lord in spreading the good news. 3) As Christians, we must be bold in sharing the good news about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When the Holy Spirit guides us in this work, we should not be afraid of what people think or of any dangers we may face. 4) If we hold certain public positions, we must advocate for what is right and wrong without taking sides out of fear or for popularity. 5) We should diligently pray and study the Word of God so that the Lord can use us in His work, whether it be spreading the good news or sharing our faith with other believers. 6) As the Lord guides us, we should assist His servants who spread the good news through prayer, material support, endorsements, and encouragement.
