Acts 22
Summary. . In this chapter, the apostle defends his faith in the Lord Jesus, while the Lord God Almighty continues to watch over him and guide him through all his trials. Acts 22:1-21. Apostle Paul speaks to the people about how his conversion came. The apostle, speaking in Hebrew, testifies to the people. He recounts his background and the violent persecution he inflicted upon those who followed the Way. During his mission of persecution, on the road to Damascus, the Lord appeared to him, introducing Himself as “Jesus of Nazareth.” During this encounter, the apostle was blinded, and the Lord Jesus provided specific instructions on where to go and whom to meet for guidance on his next steps. In Damascus, a devout man of God named Ananias prayed for the apostle to regain his sight. Ananias, speaking through the Holy Spirit, reveals to Paul that the Lord Jesus Himself spoke to him on the road and chose him to be a witness to what he had seen and heard. Ananias instructs Paul to be baptized and wash away his sins by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus. Later, while praying in the temple in Jerusalem, the apostle Paul experienced a trance in which the Lord Jesus instructed him to go and spread the good news to the Gentiles. Acts 22:22-29. Apostle Paul reveals his Roman citizenship. The Lord’s children grew angry with the apostle when he shared with them the Lord’s plan to save the whole world, demanding that he be killed. The Roman commander, concerned about the uproar, ordered Paul to be scourged for questioning. While being stretched for scourging, the apostle disclosed his Roman citizenship to the centurion, who then reported it to the commander. Upon discovering Paul was a Roman citizen and that they had bound him without trial, the commander and the soldiers became afraid. Acts 22:30. The commander brought the apostle before the council of the Jews so that he would know what decision to make about the prisoner.

Men, brothers, and fathers, hear my defence now to you.

Then, having heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they became the more quiet; and he says,
Comments Acts 22:1-2
“... having heard that he spoke to them ...” Give notice, all readers. The apostle’s address to the Lord’s children, the words he used, caught their attention, and they wanted to hear, especially that the apostle used their own language. The impact of the language made their hearts reluctant to ignore the message.
“They became the more quiet.” The actions of the people gave a positive feeling to the apostle himself. When everyone kept their mouths shut, it also let the apostle know that the listeners’ ears would hear him, and the impact would reach their hearts as well.

I am a man, a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, now brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, having been instructed according to the exactness of the law of our fathers, being a zealous one for God , even as you all are this day;
Comments Acts 22:3
The apostle announced to all so that they knew his origin and background, and also told them how faithful and strong training in the way of the Lord God Almighty he had received, as they themselves had been taught. By telling about the way of his own practice toward the Lord God Almighty, this would remind the children of the Lord to think more about what they were intended to do with him.

who persecuted this Way as far as death, binding and delivering to prisons both men and women.
Comments Acts 22:4
“Who persecuted this Way as far as death.” The apostle did not hide his wrongdoing toward the children of God. The violent actions of the apostle in the past also revealed to the children of God that he himself was one of those who opposed the teachings of the forefathers.
“Binding and delivering to prisons ...” The apostle admitted to the Lord’s children that the teachings he received were wrong toward the children of God, because the Lord God Almighty teaches His children loving kindness toward each other. However, he had been taught in the wrong way, which made him forget the basic teachings of the Lord God Almighty.

As also the high priest bears me witness, and all the eldership; from whom also having received letters to the brothers, I was on my way to Damascus, to bring also those being there, bound to Jerusalem, so that they might be punished.
Comments Acts 22:5
“As also the high priest bears me ...” It was the right way for the apostle to announce the witnesses who would also hear his testimony. These witnesses would also be involved in making decisions and would be the ones who would give an account of what the apostle spoke.
“From whom also having received ...” The apostle took duty to bring all those that the letter stated, to bring them in order to be punished on account of their actions.
“Bound to Jerusalem, so that ...” The apostle had a duty to bind the believers as prisoners and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished according to the law of the Jews.

And it happened to me journeying, and drawing near to Damascus, about noon, suddenly out of heaven a great light shone around me.
Comments Acts 22:6
“And it happened to me journeying ...” In all things, the Lord God Almighty has a specific place and time to perform miracles and actions, making all things right in the eyes of the Lord.
“Suddenly out of heaven a great light ...” Give attention, all believers; at the right time, as the verse tells us all, the great light shone around the apostle. This light was not to hurt but to make direct contact with the apostle. The apostle would know in his heart that all things are under the Lord God Almighty’s direction.

And I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute M e ?
Comments Acts 22:7
“And I fell to the ground, and heard ...” With the mighty power the Lord God Almighty showed Himself to His apostle, and this made his heart and strength melt, and he could not stay up, and in his heart, the fear captured him. The awe of the Lord captured his human heart, but the curious still had power, and that made the apostle’s mouth ask, “who are You that speak?” However, within his heart, he knew it was the Lord speaking to him.
“Why do you persecute Me?” Give attention, all believers; this question has two meanings in itself. Persecute the Lord God Almighty, physically or spiritually. Everyone must consider the distinction between physical persecution and spiritual persecution. Physical, when one persecutes the children of the Lord physically, and spiritual, when one uses bad words toward the children of the Lord and the Lord Himself (see Matthew 25:34-46).

Then I answered, Who are Y ou , Lord ? Then H e said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.
Comments Acts 22:8
“Then I answered, Who are You, Lord?” The apostle may use the question, but notice the respect in that question itself. The term Lord he used in this place has a deeper meaning in itself.
“Then He said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth.” The Lord’s love and mercy are shown in this answer to the apostle. The beloved Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, had come and spoken directly to His apostle. But, this speaking had two impacts on the apostle’s heart itself. The first impact made the apostle realize that the beloved Son of God loves him and would use him for His work. The second impact also told the apostle to be prepared for the significant challenges of life he would face, as he would have to go and spread the good news related to the beloved Son of God’s love and mercy.
“Whom you persecute.” This saying brought great sorrow and hurt to the apostle’s heart. The memory came back to him of what he did against the beloved Son of God and His children. In the apostle’s past lifetime, he had committed great sins, but now, by this appearing, the Lord made the apostle know that the Lord forgave him for his sins. But he must go and do the work according to the guidance he would receive at each step.

Then those, being with me, indeed beheld the light, but they did not hear the voice of the One speaking to me.
Comments Acts 22:9
“Then those, being with me, indeed ...” Now, not only did the apostle see the light, but other witnesses also saw this light.
“But they did not hear the voice ...” The voice of the Lord was only for the apostle to hear and know instructions. The rest did not receive this blessing to hear the voice of the Lord.

Then I said, What shall I do, Lord ? And the Lord said to me, Having risen up, go to Damascus, and there it will be told you concerning all things that it has been appointed you to do.
Comments Acts 22:10
“Then I said, What shall I do, Lord?” Give attention, all believers; the apostle heard the word from the Lord, and without doubt, and with all his heart, he was ready to receive the order from the Lord. The apostle had the right attitude to receive the great work.
“And the Lord said to me ...” The blessed apostle received direct instructions on where and what he would have to do. And with all his heart, he was willing to follow the order.

And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those being with me, I came to Damascus.
Comments Acts 22:11
“And when I could not see for the glory ...” Give attention, all believers. The light from the Lord God Almighty, the brightness, even the apostle that He chose, did not have the ability to stare at. The human body has limitations. The Lord God Almighty created humans, but did not give them the authority or the ability to stand in the presence of or look at the glory of the Most High God.
“Being led by the hand by those ...” The Lord God Almighty provided people who could help the apostle to go to the place where the plan had it for the apostle to be.

And Ananias, a certain devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the dwelling Jews,
Comments Acts 22:12
As the verse tells us, a devout man came to the apostle, not a simple man who had been called to come. The Lord God Almighty selected the right one to come and interact with the apostle.
13
having come to me, and having stood by me, said to me, Brother Saul, receive your sight. And I, the same hour, looked up at him.
Comments Acts 22:13
“Having come to me, and having stood ...” The Lord God Almighty sent His servant to the apostle and gave the instructions to the servant on what to say to His apostle. Simple words, yet with authority, gave the result, a positive outcome for the apostle. The apostle himself received the blessed words and was healed.
“And I, the same hour, looked ...” The apostle felt in his heart to follow the instructions. Even though he knew that he was blind, his heart received the true light. He lifted his eyes to look at the one speaking, following the command with both heart and action. The result was amazing, not only for the apostle himself, but also for the people around him, who became witnesses that the Lord God Almighty was at work in this place with His apostle.

And he said, The God of our fathers has appointed you to know H is will, and to see the Righteous One , and to hear the voice from H is mouth.
Comments Acts 22:14
“And he said, The God of our fathers ...” The apostle felt in His heart that his time had come; the Lord God Almighty would have miracles work for his life; he just had to obey.
“And to see the Righteous One ...” The blessed servant announced to the apostle that the apostle himself saw the beloved Son of God with his own eyes and heard His voice talking with him. Now, after being blind, the eyes that see were different.

For you will be a witness for H im to all men of what you have seen and heard.
Comments Acts 22:15
“For you will be a witness for Him.” The faithful servant of the Lord God Almighty told the apostle, Your time is here. What happened to you, both physically and spiritually, you must tell all the people. You must tell all how great the Lord God Almighty’s love and mercy are that you receive.
“To all men of what you have seen ...” The apostle had a duty to tell the truth about what had happened; this is a witness from the mouth of a person who had received love, mercy, and miracles in his life. You must tell what happened in your life; this will make you a true witness, and the Lord God Almighty will work with the hearts of people who hear this story.

And now what do you intend? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on H is name.
Comments Acts 22:16
“And now what do you intend?” Simple question, not from men but from the Lord God Almighty. The faithful servant asked the apostle what his heart was telling him to do. Whatever you want to do, follow your heart and what it tells you.
“Arise, be baptized, and ...” Give attention, all readers; this is an order to the apostle. The Lord God Almighty called His apostle, and when you have faith and accept with your heart the mercy of the Lord God Almighty, you need to be baptized in water to wash away your sins. Baptism in water is not only to clean the physical, but to clean your soul from sins. The baptism in water is the command from the Lord God Almighty for all believers to do.
“Calling on His name.” When you go in the water, tell your heart and soul to call out to the Trinity of God to come into your heart and receive you to be His witness.

Then it came to pass to me, having returned to Jerusalem, while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,
Comments Acts 22:17
“Then it came to pass to me ...” The time had passed, and the apostle went to Jerusalem. The Lord God Almighty wanted His apostle to be in a specific place to receive the next order of work.
“While I prayed in the temple ...” When the apostle was praying, his heart and spirit were also in prayer. At that moment, the Lord God Almighty showed His apostle what the next order he would do. The Lord God Almighty had a specific way of communicating with the apostle.

Comments Acts 22:18
“And saw Him saying to me ...” Give attention, all readers; this was an order that the Lord God Almighty gave to His apostle to do. The problem was coming, but the apostle needed time to be ready.
“Because they will not receive ...” The apostle told all people about the Lord God Almighty and His beloved Son, but the people with dark mind control cannot accept the good news. The fight against the good news began at this time.

And I said, Lord , they themselves know that I was imprisoning and beating in every synagogue those believing on T hee ,
Comments Acts 22:19
“And I said, Lord, they themselves know ...” As the verse tells us, the apostle did violent acts before the Lord God Almighty had convicted his heart; the Lord God Almighty had worked in His apostle’s heart. The Lord God Almighty does the same for every human. After committing sins, if your heart seeks His mercy and you, deeply and honestly, repent, then your own soul will open the room for you to be saved.
“Those believing on Thee.” The life of the apostle in the past was full of evil activity. The old person showed no mercy or love for other humans, but the true mercy had been poured down on the sinner. As for the apostle, in the same way, the same mercy will be poured down on every human.

and when the blood of Stephen T hy witness was poured out, I myself also was standing by, and consenting, and watching over the garments of those killing him.
Comments Acts 22:20
“And when the blood of Stephen ...” The apostle was watching the violent act toward the believer, but the picture in his eyes did not reach his heart at that time. Let all readers note that when the dark mind controls you, the words “right” and “wrong” do not arise in your heart, as this apostle had no mercy for the believer; this was the heart of the apostle at that time.
“I myself also was standing by ...” All readers can notice the sorrowful heart the apostle feels at this time; he did not commit the act, but participated by watching their belongings, in order to make them do evil to the believer.

And H e said to me, Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.
Comments Acts 22:21
Give attention, all readers; the Lord God Almighty ordered His apostle. The big job for this apostle was waiting; he had to go and tell the whole Earth the good news regarding the mercy of the Lord God Almighty. Now, the Lord God Almighty’s mercy is not only for His children, but the whole Earth will receive the good news and be saved.
22
Now, they were listening to him until this word; and they lifted up their voice, saying, Away with such one from the earth; for it is not fit for him to live.
Comments Acts 22:22
“Now, they were listening to him ...” Jealousy is a big problem for humans. When the apostle told the Lord’s children that the Gentiles would also be called to serve the Lord God Almighty, they became jealous.
“And they lifted up their voice, saying ...” The Lord’s children were now angry with the apostle because he had told them that not only would they be saved, but the whole Earth would be saved. The Lord’s children did not want someone else to be on the same level with them, because they considered that only they were the Lord’s children, the Gentiles were outsiders and did not deserve to be saved.
“For it is not fit for him to live.” The Lord’s children’s anger was beyond control; only violence was in their hearts at this point in time. For the Lord’s children, the apostle deserved to die because the apostle wanted to give the good news to the Gentiles.

Then they were crying out, and throwing off the cloaks, and casting dust into the air.
Comments Acts 22:23
These actions of the people showed that they believed the apostle had blasphemed against the Lord God Almighty. These actions also indicated to the outsider that they believed the apostle not only needed to be punished but also to be killed in order to stop the anger of the Lord God Almighty towards the people.

The commander commanded him to be brought into the camp, saying, By scourges let him be examined, so that he might know for what cause they so cried out against him.
Comments Acts 22:24
“The commander commanded him to be ...” The soldier commander saw the anger of the people. Their actions could lead to big problems for the commander himself. By separating the apostle out, the people would cool down, so to be safe for themselves, he ordered the apostle to be brought into the camp where the soldiers were.
“By scourges let him be examined ...” In the mind of this soldier, the punishment will make the prisoner talk. In the mind of the soldier, the punishment makes people speak the truth. The beating would be severe and painful, humans would admit all the guilt they had committed, and this commander wanted to use enforcement to make the apostle admit his guilt.

However, as he stretched him with straps, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man, a Roman, and uncondemned?
Comments Acts 22:25
“However, as he stretched him with straps.” Let all readers imagine the picture: the apostle in that position, with no way to escape or fight. The apostle served the Lord God Almighty, facing a very difficult situation, but his heart did not waver from faith.
“Paul said to the centurion ...” Now, the apostle had an advantage because of his earthly citizenship. The apostle knew that his citizenship would make people afraid. Whatever they intended to do with him, the earthly citizenship would help him, but the apostle also had faith in why he had this citizenship: it was from the Lord God Almighty to help him in this difficult situation.

26
Then the centurion, having heard it, having gone to the commander, he reported, saying, What are you going to do? For this man is a Roman.
Comments Acts 22:26
“Then the centurion, having heard it.” Being a soldier, when he heard the citizenship of the prisoner, he knew the risk of getting into conflict with a national problem. This news created fear in this soldier.
“Having gone to the commander ...” As a soldier, by approaching the commander, he also took a risk of getting into trouble. However, the news about the prisoner had made the soldier more afraid of being in bigger trouble than being punished a little by the commander.
“What are you going to do? ...” The news the soldier gave to the commander brought more fear to all the soldiers. This prisoner could put them all in trouble; even the commander himself would be unable to protect himself.

Then the commander, having come, said to him, Tell me, are you a Roman? And he said, Yes.
Comments Acts 22:27
With great fear, the commander himself came to ask the apostle a straight question. And with the simple answer the apostle gave to the commander, a simple answer, but with the great weight of the word, that will impact the commander’s decision for the apostle’s life.
28
And the commander answered, I, with a great sum, bought this citizenship. And Paul said, But I have even been born so.
Comments Acts 22:28
“And the commander answered ...” The human world’s money has power. Here is the place where, with the right amount of money, you can make yourself be born in a different country. This commander tried to use his own reasoning to control his fear, but the seed of doubt had already been sown in his heart.
“And Paul said, But I have ...” The answer from the apostle brought great fear. Now, the comparison between being bought by money or being born into a place has a different weight, and that is the turning point for the commander and all the soldiers.

29
Immediately, therefore, they departed from him who were about to examine him, and the commander also was afraid, having knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
Comments Acts 22:29
“Immediately, therefore, they departed ...” All readers can notice the fear of this soldier due to the prisoner who had an important citizenship. Only knowing what the apostle’s citizenship was made everyone afraid to be involved.
“And the commander also was afraid ...” Being a commander, a high-ranking soldier, did not protect him from being secure anymore. The prisoner became an important person to the commander, so he was afraid of being involved with him. When humans put other humans in a position of greater power and higher status, it makes other humans afraid to be involved in a negative way.
“And because he had bound him.” At this point, the commander was more afraid for his own life and that of his family. In the commander’s mind, for the fullish things he did to this prisoner, binding him, it made him afraid. By the law of the Romans, the commander could lose his life, and even those of higher authority above him would not try to protect him; they would be afraid of being involved with him now. The fear of this soldier for the status of the apostle made the apostle thankful and caused his heart to glorify the Lord God Almighty for giving him this citizenship.

Now, on the next day, desiring to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together; and having brought Paul down, he set him before them.
Comments Acts 22:30
“Now, on the next day, desiring to know ...” In the commander’s eyes, the only way now to save his life was to treat the apostle better, first, by unbinding him and setting him free. The commander also expected that this decision would save him as well. Then, he had taken the apostle between the high-ranking people to be judged; now, the commander expected the guild was not for him to bear.
“And having brought Paul down ...” When the commander brought the apostle between them, by setting the apostle in the midst of them, he let those be the ones who would make the next decision about the prisoner.

Life and faith applications. 1) Upon the confession of your faith, be baptized in water in the name of the Trinity of God: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit. Pray and trust the Lord in all situations. 2) Do not be ashamed or afraid to share your faith in the Lord Jesus; witness about Him to those the Lord brings into your path. 3) As Christians, we must refrain from engaging in any violent actions or persecution against others. 4) Pray to the Lord, seeking and listening to the guidance of the Holy Spirit to discover your calling for service; be content with whatever calling the Lord places in your life. 5) Thank the Lord for all the blessings He provides in your life, and act with wisdom in all situations. 6) Do not do your job to please yourself or others but to be pleasing to the Lord by doing what is right in His sight.
