Summary. In this chapter, the apostles testify about the power by which they performed the healing of the feeble man. They stand firm on their testimony about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all their difficulties and prayers. Acts 4:1-7. Peter and John were arrested and questioned by the Counsel. The apostles' duty was to proclaim the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and because of doing their duty, Peter and John were arrested and questioned. The apostles have been pointed out and accused of serving the Living God. The dark minds of the leaders of the Jews could not accept the light to come, and they planned to stop the work of God. Acts 4:8-12. The defense of Peter. Peter filled with the Holy Spirit discourses about the power by which the feeble man was healed, namely that in the name of the Lord Jesus, who was crucified, buried, and rose from the dead, the man received his physical and spiritual healing. Peter testifies that the beloved Son of God is the true stone of faith for the world. His glory and power are unlimited; God the Father has given Him all authority over all humans. Only through Him can humans reach the Father, for without the Son, nothing will be done; no other can save humans but One: the Lord Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God. Acts 4:13-22. Peter and John were charged by the Counsel. The rulers were afraid of the people, so they only threatened the disciples to stop spreading the way to be saved, but the work of God was already spreading in people's hearts; the rulers did not have any more power to control the people. They tried to stop the disciples from spreading the word about God, but as men of God, the disciples chose to listen to the Holy Spirit. Acts 4:23-28. The followers of the Lord Jesus glorify God the Father and His Christ. The disciples lifted their voices and glorified God the Father, the Creator of all things, who anointed the Lord Jesus as His Holy Servant. God's Holy Servant, Jesus Christ, came to earth and had been betrayed by those that He took as His own; the leaders of the people and those who claimed to know the Law of God were the ones who betrayed His beloved Son, but God the Father set Him above all things He has created. Acts 4:29-31. The followers of the Lord Jesus ask for the power of ministry and are filled with the Holy Spirit. The Lord answers the disciples' prayers, sends the Holy Spirit with mighty signs, and fills them with power from above. When the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit in their souls, that filling gave them the ability to perform miracles and stand firm in testifying about the miracles of God Almighty. Acts 4:32-37. The followers of the Lord Jesus live in unity and give testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. All the disciples gathered around the apostles and had fellowship in unity. Selfishness had no room among them, and all showed love for one another.
[1] And as they are speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
[2] being troubled because of their teaching the people, and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Comments Acts 4:1-2 “... being troubled because of their teaching the people.” When people who claim to know everything themselves see someone else teaching the people, jealousy takes over in their hearts, and they ignore God's voice in their hearts.
“And proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.” The apostles' duty was to proclaim the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. The beloved Son of God is alive, not only to them but to all humans; the duty of all believers is the same as well: go out and proclaim the resurrection of the beloved Son of God to all humans.
[3] And they laid the hands on them, and put them in ward until tomorrow; for it was already evening.
[4] However, many of those having heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
Comments Acts 4:3-4 “... many of those having heard the word believed.” As the verse tells, many listened and also were thinking; however, even though the apostles were taken away, the Word impacted the hearts of people; the work of God has started in people's hearts at this point.
“And the number of the men came to be about five thousand.” Let the readers pay attention to the number of men in this place; when the Lord God Almighty works, He also sends the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of men; the word they have heard made an impact.
[5] Then it came to pass on the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem,
[6] and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the high-priestly kindred.
Comments Acts 4:5-6 At this point, all those who did not want to glorify the Lord had come together, with their dark minds and hearts closed, and joined together to make a plan; many dark minds had joined together to fight against the light.
[7] And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power, or in what name, did you do this?
[8] Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people, and elders,
Comments Acts 4:7-8 When the dark mind has occupied human thought, the voice of the Lord becomes unheard. The apostles have been pointed out and accused of serving the Living God. The dark mind cannot accept the light to come; the plan to stop the work of God began at this point.
[9] if we this day are investigated as to a good work to a feeble man, by what he has been healed;
Comments Acts 4:9 As the verse says, the mighty work of God has been performed here, and the people saw, but the dark minds had turned their thoughts away, emphasizing in the wrong place; instead of concentrating on the mighty power of God, they think of men's work; men alone have no power in healing, but the apostles with the Holy Spirit could do miracle work.
[10] be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in Him this man stands before you sound.
Comments Acts 4:10 “be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel.” As the verse says, let all His children listen and pay attention; the God Most High wants His people to know.
“That in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, ...” His own people had crucified the beloved Son of God. The beloved Son of God has accepted the death sentence from His own people, but all of you listen: He is alive; the beloved Son of God is resurrected in His body; the beloved Son of God never dies and cannot die.
“In Him this man stands before you sound.” The beloved Son of God gave the gift to this man through the prophet of God; the man was healed and became normal; the Lord had given him not only physical health but the gift of spiritual health as well.
[11] He is the stone, which has been regarded as nothing by you the builders, which has become into head of the corner.
Comments Acts 4:11 “He is the stone.” The beloved Son of God is the true stone of faith for the world. His glory and power are unlimited; God the Father has given Him all authority over all humans. Only through Him can be reached to the Father, for without the Son, nothing will be done.
“Which has been regarded as nothing by you the builders.” The beloved Son of God has been put down by His people, but He will be the One that all His people need to be back and receive back the blessing from the Father; without Him, they are nothing.
“Which has become into head of the corner.” The main foundation of faith is based upon the resurrection of the Son of God; without the beloved Son on the Father's side, all human faith does not have any ground; everyone's faith must be built on the resurrection of the beloved Son of God. “Into head of the corner,” which means that the Father will take souls into the kingdom only at the Son's request.
[12] And there is not salvation in any other, for there is no other name under the heaven having been given among men, by which it behooves us to be saved.
Comments Acts 4:12 “And there is not salvation in any other.” All humans give attention; the verse clearly tells that no other can save humans but One: the Lord Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God.
“For there is no other name under the heaven ...” It is clear here that only One name can save humans; to go to heaven is only through the beloved Son of God.
[13] Now, seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and having perceived that they are unlearned men and laymen, they marvelled; then they recognized them, that they had been with Jesus.
Comments Acts 4:13 “Now, seeing the boldness of Peter and John ...” Humans have seen the miracle work of God; uneducated men spoke glorifying God and performed miracles. God Almighty does not need high-level people to do His work; common or uncommon people can do miracle work as well.
“Then they recognized them, that they had been with Jesus.” Let it be clear to all humans that miracles can be done only under One name: Jesus, the beloved Son of God. The apostles have been with the Son of God, so all the miracles work they performed is under the power and authority of the beloved Son of God.
[14] And seeing the man having been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
Comments Acts 4:14 The miracle had been proven by their own eyes, and this made people feel that they could not challenge the mighty work of God in this place.
[15] However, having commanded them to go outside the Council, they conferred with one another,
[16] saying, What shall we do to these men? For that, indeed, a well-known miracle has come to pass through them, to all those dwelling in Jerusalem is manifest, and we are not able to deny it.
Comments Acts 4:15-16 Let the readers pay attention to the verse as well; when the rulers took the disciples outside so they could prepare questions for them to sentence them, between themselves, they couldn't reach the questions which they could ask as well; the fear in their hearts was not because of the mighty work they witnessed, but the people that witnessed the mighty work scared them. Within them, they all had the same feeling: fighting with God is easy, but when fighting with men, they don't want to take a chance, and the miracle had been proven in front of people's eyes, and the rulers themselves could not deny it.
[17] But that it might not spread on further among the people, let us warn them to speak not anymore to any man in this name.
Comments Acts 4:17 Now, when the rulers have been afraid of people, they have threatened the disciples to stop spreading the way to be saved and are trying to make the work of God stop without further spreading, but the work of God is already spreading in people's hearts; the rulers do not have any more power to control the people.
[18] And having called them, they charged them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
Comments Acts 4:18 People tried to stop the disciples from spreading the word about God, but as men of God, the disciples have chosen to listen to the Holy Spirit. The beloved Son of God has put His life for all humans, but not all humans want to accept His mercy. He is still waiting even for those who reject Him. Let the readers give attention to the fact that these rulers wanted to stop the disciples not only from teaching but also from mentioning the name of the beloved Son of God to the people.
[19] But Peter and John answering, said to them, Whether it is right in the presence of God to hearken to you rather than to God, you judge;
[20] for we cannot, what we have seen and heard, not to speak.
Comments Acts 4:19-20 The disciples stood firm to what they had heard and seen from the beloved Son of God. The disciples are the witnesses of the mighty work of the beloved Son of God on earth; their hearts and mouths will not let them stay at rest; they cannot be secret about what they have witnessed.
[21] And adding further threats, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people, because all were glorifying God for that which had happened.
Comments Acts 4:21 “And adding further threats ...” The verse tells all readers clearly that these rulers were not afraid of God but humans; when their eyes saw people, that was what the rulers thought to be afraid of. God is not powerful for them at this point.
“Because all were glorifying God ...” Let all readers take this as an example: the people worship God for what they saw, the mighty work of God had been done, the eyes of people saw the actions of their rulers, but their hearts had been touched by the Holy Spirit; the mighty work of God touched people hearts in a different way than the hearts of the rulers.
[22] For the man was more than forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing had taken place.
[23] Now, having been let go, they came to their own, and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
Comments Acts 4:23 After they were released, they returned to where they usually met with the others, and they reported what the rulers who tried to fight against them said to them before releasing them.
[24] And having heard, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Master, Thou made the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and all those in them;
Comments Acts 4:24 “And having heard, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord.” In this place, all readers should pay attention to the hearts of the disciples, whether joy or sadness, but the disciples first come to the Lord asking for mercy. We can see the unity of prayer among the disciples; God Almighty knows all the problems, but He also wants all believers to come in unity and lift up their voices and drop their tears and beg for mercy, and the sincerity of hearts that worship the Lord will be rewarded as well.
“Master, Thou made the heaven ...” As the verse says here, the disciples recognized the God Most High, who created all things. Why do not all humans come and recognize the God Most High, who created all things? Let all come and worship the God Almighty and ask for His advice in all things.
[25] who by the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David Thy servant, did say, Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples did imagine vain things?
Comments Acts 4:25 As the verse says, what the outsiders behave, you should not be like them. By the power of the Holy Spirit, the minds of the Lord's people have been enlightened. As people of God, you think about: if the outsiders behave evil, you should stay far from them; even if you live among them, their behavior should not be yours; listen to the voice of the Lord in your heart and be different.
“The Gentiles rage ...” When the outsiders see you behave differently, their anger wants to make them attack you, but as children of God, do not be afraid of their plans; the Lord will protect your camp among them.
[26] The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together themselves against the Lord, and against His Christ.
Comments Acts 4:26 All humans pay attention to this verse: who have humans risen up against? God Almighty, the Creator of them, His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, they came to deny and reject Him; ungrateful humans came and rejected the One who will give His life for them, the Son of God; the love from the beloved Son of God received back the rejection of Him from them; the One who created universe, earth, humans, and all creatures has been put down by them. But, if not because of the Lord Jesus, they all would be wiped out; come back and glorify the Creator of all, give thanks to God Almighty; the human kings of this earth have rejected the Most High King, God Almighty.
[27] for in truth, in this city, against Thy holy Servant Jesus, whom Thou anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together,
Comments Acts 4:27 Give attention to this verse carefully: the Lord had predestined what would happen in the future; His own children had betrayed His beloved Son. His Holy Servant, Jesus Christ, had been betrayed by those that He took as His own; the leaders of the people and those who claimed to know the Law of God were the ones who betrayed His beloved Son. God the Father has anointed His beloved Son to be above all things that He has created.
“Predestined” here must be understood in the sense that the Lord did not intervene and allowed all things to happen.
As humans, how can we understand that God the Father had predestined for His beloved Son to have all these sufferings happening to Him? The way humans think is the opposite of what it is; the Father knew His people and what they would do to His holy Son; the Son also knew what the people would do to Him, but by His own will, He wanted to save them by accepting what would happen if He comes to earth. God the Father could stop what would happen, but for the beloved Son's wish to be fulfilled, He allowed things to happen. The Father knew who would do what and when, but He let them act with their dark minds to do it without stopping it. Always God the Father gives free will to all humans, and this is one of the free will they choose to do.
[28] to do whatever Thy hand and purpose predestined to happen.
Comments Acts 4:28 When the beloved Son of God had the plan for how to save His people, God the Father honored the Son's wishes and let everything happen upon His Son without stopping it; even God the Father knew how much His Son would suffer, but the wishes of the Son to save humans will be fulfilled.
“Predestined” here in this verse must be understood in the sense that the Lord did not intervene and allowed all things to happen to fulfill His Son's wishes to save the world.
[29] And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings, and grant to Thy servants to speak Thy word with all boldness,
Comments Acts 4:29 God the Father always listens to those who beg for mercy with sincere hearts. The purpose of this begging here from the Lord is not for lifting up of themselves but to glorify the God Most High. When you rely on the power and mercy of God Almighty, you have shown humbleness of the soul as well; the Lord God Almighty will be merciful for His servants.
[30] in that Thy stretch out Thy hand, for healing, and signs and wonders to be done through the name of Thy holy Servant Jesus.
Comments Acts 4:30 “In that Thy stretch out Thy hand.” Watch out! Here, the verse clearly tells us that the Father Himself has His own plan because of the coming of His Son on earth. When the Father stretches out His hand to take care of the things around the world, the result will impact all living, not only humans; all things that God Almighty has created will notice His power.
“For healing, and signs and wonders ...” God the Father works through the beloved Son of God with greatness: the miracles of healing and helping the world will be shown, and even nature itself will have signs that cannot be explained. The beloved Son of God will also perform miracles with His power and might; the Father has given to the beloved Son of God all decisions upon His will; all the mighty work and miracles will be shown to all humans to see.
[31] And they having prayed, the place was shaken in which they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and were speaking the word of God with boldness.
Comments Acts 4:31 “And they having prayed, the place was shaken ...” Let all readers pay attention to what the verse says; when the disciples prayed with open hearts and begged for mercy, the Father responded with the sign of shaking the whole place. If, in response to the prayer of the disciples, the place was shaken, let all think about what would happen to the earth when the beloved Son of God returns in His Father's glory.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” When the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit in their souls, that filling gave them the ability to perform miracles and stand firm in testifying about the miracles of God Almighty. The filing of a person with the Holy Spirit will also impact not just the soul but the heart and body as well.
“And were speaking the word of God with boldness.” When filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, the person will go out and speak boldly about the work of God, with no reluctance to spread it and without fear of consequences for themselves.
Q: Is this filling with the Holy Spirit different than the baptism in the Holy Spirit? A: When filling with the Holy Spirit, the human will feel the strengthening of the soul within themselves; the human soul will acknowledge the power that has been given to them for the work of serving. When baptized in the Holy Spirit, the souls of humans have been touched and comforted with the mercy of the Holy Spirit; the persons will have the urge to go out and tell how to be recognized in working for God; when the person speaks the Holy Spirit will give the words what to say to others.
Q: How often should a believer pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit? A: Humans have neglected to pray consistently; always being in prayer is the hardest thing for humans to do. The human mind tends to think it can pray later but to be filled with the Holy Spirit, prayer is needed at all times, so pray at all times to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
[32] And the multitude of those that believed were of one heart and soul, and not one said that anything of that which he possessed was his own; but all things were to them in common.
Comments Acts 4:32 Let all believers give attention to this verse: when the Lord said with one heart and soul, the Lord wants all believers to cut the selfish off from themselves; the children of God Almighty should not have this feeling within themselves; believers should consider all things to share. Especially among believers of the same family of God, to share without concern about whom it belongs to; that is the purpose because God Almighty is the One who gives the believers all that they have; therefore, sharing among believers is the way it should be.
[33] And with great power the apostles gave testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus; and great grace was upon them all.
Comments Acts 4:33 “... testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.” When the true realization came upon the disciples, they all, with one accord, went out and testified about the resurrection of the beloved Son of God. The most difficult thing for people to understand is that if Jesus is God, why does He have to die? But the disciples' testimony of the resurrection has pointed out to them as well that God never dies, and the beloved Son of God, Jesus, is God, and that is why death cannot hold Him in the grave.
“And great grace was upon them all.” By the mercy of God the Father, all disciples received a grace blessing to stand firm in this faith and to go out and go around without reluctance to spread the good news.
“Grace blessing.” For the disciples to go and explain the miracles the beloved Son of God performed, it was not like normal people's minds could come up with all the stories, so by the mercy of God the Father, the disciples' memory was bright, with no flaw in telling the truth.
[34] For there was not even anyone needy among them; for as many as were owners of lands or houses were selling them, bringing the prices of what were sold,
Comments Acts 4:34 Let the readers pay attention to what the verse says: selfishness has no room among believers. All these disciples had done according to love for one another. True believers receive the gift from the Lord not to be selfish; love among believers is needed among believers.
[35] and laid them at the feet of the apostles; and distribution was made to each, according as anyone had need.
Comments Acts 4:35 “And laid them at the feet of the apostles.” The people of God had one heart and did according to the stirring of their heart, for the people all think the same: the treasures of this earth are not for themselves but for glorifying the Lord; so, all have brought their treasures at the feet of the apostles as humbleness, and with one heart wanted to glorify God Almighty.
The people did not think about themselves as the Bible does not tell what they were doing after, but when you put yourselves at the hand of God, there is no need to be worried anymore.
“And distribution was made ...” Whatever was extra that was not needed for the work, God Almighty also thought of people; the distribution had been made according to each person's need, and when the people put their trust in God, the Lord always provided for them.
[36] And Joseph, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, which is translated Son of exhortation, a Levite, a Cypriot by race,
[37] a field being his, having sold it, brought the money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
Comments Acts 4:36-37 In this place, the apostle (a follower), Barnabas, a specific person, had made a sacrifice from his own wish. The Lord has stirred his heart to have peace in his doing, but he wished he could do even more after all this; he had not much left for himself; he had brought all that he had at the feet of the apostles as a sign of humble and sacrifice, and that is the reason his name has been written down in the Holy Bible; his action will pass on through his family, the heart of true worshiper towards God had given a result to act out in this sacrificing way.
Life and Faith Applications. 1) As true followers of the Lord Jesus, we must continue the testimony of the apostles and proclaim to all we meet the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and that the beloved Son of God is alive. 2) Regardless of persecutions we might face on this earth, we must hearken to God and do His will always. 3) As followers of the Lord Jesus, we must always pray to be refilled with the Holy Spirit so we can testify about our Lord Jesus with boldness. 4) Do not be selfish, help one another, and live in unity; true believers receive the gift from the Lord, not to be selfish; love is needed among believers.
